Surreal Still life paintings in oils

All my ideas are based upon impossibilities. This started while I was wandering around a second-hand shop and saw a ship in a bottle. After completing a series on the same theme, I continued the concept into new areas.

Asparagus spear. Oil on canvas. 40x50cm. £650

I dropped an egg while making mayonnaise and the ‘spear’ idea came to mind.

Impossible cups. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £620

Someone bought us a set of different cups to go with our coffee machine. I started a still life but it looked dull, so I painted them at unrealistic angles.

Incubation. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £650

Eggs are a beautiful smooth shape and a pleasure to render. I was considering pairing them with equally fragile bulbs and incubation sprang to mind.

Hybrid grapes. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £580

For some reason, I felt like painting some grapes. However, to make them more interesting, I put three types together on one stem.

Impossible eggs. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £650

The latest in a series of impossible objects in bottles.

Bulb on a broken beam. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £650

This concept arose whilst I changed a bulb in the attic. I liked the play on resistant materials, with the egg seemingly heavier than the beam.

Impossible mugs. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £620

This painting was tricky because I had to make much of it up. The inspiration came from Escher’s clever pictures.

Egg and feather. Oil on canvas. 40x50cm. £680

This began as an idea for painting the chicken or egg conundrum. It evolved into the pen is mightier than the…egg!
