Still life paintings in oils

Three flowers in vases. Oil on canvas. 40x50cm. £680

A while ago, I painted an artichoke in a vase, not realising it was a flower. Once I found out, adding the cauliflower and broccoli made a subtly humorous painting.

Radishes. Oil on canvas. 50x60cm. £720

I’m a novice gardener and my radishes were pitiful. Wandering around a market, I discovered they came in all shapes and colours. Great for a painting.

Three fruit. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £620

A triangle composition always works well to lead the eye. In this case, the taller pear angling down to the apple and lemon fitted the bill.

Jug and stones. Oil on canvas. 30x40cm. £580

This ancient jug has been a brush-holding companion in my studio for many years. I was painting stones for something else and realised they were perfect bedfellows.

Eggs and chive. Oil on canvas. 40x50cm. £680

We keep eggs in a wicker basket next to a Spanish dish full of bits. After putting them together, I decided a contrasting colour was needed, hence the chive.

Eggplant. Oil on canvas. 24x30cm. £520

My wife is Australian and insists on using eggplant rather than aubergine. So, I decided it would be a good idea to make the distinction and get my own back!

Fruit in jars. Oil on canvas. 24x34cm. £520

As you might expect, the jars were taken from a hotel we stayed in. In the spirit of chefy deconstruction trends I did my version of jam!
