STILL LIFE IN OILS

I like to incorporate different textures, reflective surfaces, moods, and unusual elements in my artwork. As a result, my style varies from traditional old master shadows and lights to more contemporary, lighter-toned paintings. Experimenting with different approaches allows me to expand my visual world through intriguing objects, new compositions and narrative.

Making art is driven by my passion for fresh challenges. Routine and endless repetition are alien concepts to me. Sometimes, producing a series of pictures on a similar theme holds my attention for a period, but eventually, my interest begins to wane, and it’s time to move on to something new.

Ideas come from both predictable and unexpected sources. The latter, in particular, is a fascinating experience because images pop into my mind when I least expect them. Things like walking the dog, cooking, gardening and conversations can spark a concept seemingly unrelated to the activity. Consequently, thinking about what I might be painting in years to come is pointless. There is so much to discover and journeys to undertake that I am inspired by what I don’t yet know.

To create my paintings, I build them in layers using thin transparent coats for shadows and impasto for lighter areas. Sometimes, I paint from life, and other times, I use my own photographs, often working from several images. Every picture evolves according to where my eyes and thoughts wander presenting the opportunity to set new goals.
